The Anna Maria Island beach day, done properly
Seven miles of public beach, all of it free. The only real question is which stretch fits your mood, and whether the chairs come to you (they can). Here is how we do it.
Which Anna Maria Island beach should we pick?
All AMI beaches are public and free, so choose by mood. Bean Point, at the far north tip, is the sunset beach: no facilities, soft white sand, the Gulf and Tampa Bay meeting in front of you. Manatee Public Beach in Holmes Beach is the full-service middle: parking, restrooms, food from 8 AM. Coquina Beach at the south end has shady Australian pines and calmer picnic energy, great with small kids. And if you are staying at Happy Turtle A or B, your beach is about 60 steps from the front door in Bradenton Beach.
Do we need to haul beach gear down?
No. Three island companies rent chairs, umbrellas, and beach carts and deliver them to the house: Beach Bums, AMI Beach Fun, and Just 4 Fun. Book before you arrive for spring break, summer, and holiday weeks; they genuinely sell out. Our homes are a short walk to the sand, so a delivered setup waiting on the beach is peak laziness, achieved.
How do we get around without a car?
The free AMI trolley runs the length of the island from the Anna Maria City Pier to Coquina Beach, 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM daily, about every 20 minutes, with stops every few blocks. Flag it, hop on, done. Uber and Lyft cover anything the trolley does not. Park the car once and forget it: island traffic in season will make that decision for you.
When is the water warmest?
The Gulf runs bath-warm from May through October, mid 80s°F at its peak. Winter water dips into the 60s: locals call it bracing, northerners call it fine. Winter beach days are still glorious, they just end with a pool instead of a swim, which is exactly what the heated pool at Happy Island Cottage is for.
What are the rules during sea turtle season?
May through October, loggerhead turtles nest on these beaches. The manners are simple: no white lights on the beach after dark, give marked nests room, and flatten your sandcastles and fill any holes when you leave, since hatchlings cannot climb. Watching a marked nest from a respectful distance is one of the quietly great AMI experiences.
Can we see dolphins from the beach?
Most mornings, yes: scan the water just past the sandbar around sunrise, especially at Bean Point. For the guaranteed version, get on the water with them: we arrange private dolphin and sandbar boat trips for our guests. That is a beach day upgraded to an island day.
